Bhubaneswar,November 24: Appealing the farmers in the drought-hit areas not to worry over re-payment of their crop loans, Odisha government today claimed not a single peasant ended his life owing to crop loss or debt burden as alleged by the opposition parties.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra on Friday said that no farmer in the State has committed suicide because of crop failure and massive debt burden.
"The Government has received 111 farmer suicide cases allegedly due to crop loss and loan burden. Meanwhile, 106 cases have been examined by the concerned district Collectors.
He further said that of the total 106 cases already investigated, 56 farmers hadn't taken any loan while 26 had taken loans from cooperative banks and 16 had taken crop loans from nationalised or private banks.
