24 People Lose Vision After Cataract Surgery At Barwani Eye-Camp

Barwani; Dec.4: In a camp held in the Barwani district hospital in Madhya Pradesh, 24 people lost their eye sight after cataract surgeries.

Around 28 patients complained of infections post the surgery and were referred to Indore for further treatment.

Out of these, 24 lost their eye sight.

"An eye check up camp for cataract was held in Barwani where around 30-35 people took part. It was during this camp that people who were operated started developing infection.When the condition of their eyes deteriorated they were referred to another ophthalmologist. It was revealed that they were on the brink of losing their eyesight," said Dr Sharad Pandit, joint director health. 

The state government has suspended eye specialist R.S. Palod and initiated action against the authorities of the Lions Club. The government has also set up a three-member committee to probe the matter.

The operation theater where the surgeries were conducted has also been sealed.
