Bhubaneswar; Dec.9: The issue of Polavaram irrigation project being set up on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh and spread across adjoining states on Tuesday rocked the Odisha assembly with both the ruling BJD and Congress opposing the central government's move to grant assistance for the project.
On the issue raised in the state assembly during the zero hour.Chitrakonda MLA Dambaru Sisa said the project will lead to submergence of 21 panchayats of 6 blocks in Malkangiri district.
BJD member Amar Prasad Satpathy said the Polavaram project matter is sub judice in the Supreme Court. Despite of this, the Centre has declared to bear 100 percent expenditure of the project, he said. The NDA government is doing so to please the Andhra Pradesh government, he added.
BJD member Sameer Ranjan Dash said the project will result in submergence of 2000 acres of land in Malkangiri.
Meanwhile, BJD MPs Bhartruhari Mahatab and Prasanna Patsani raise Polavaram issue in Lok Sabha as well, criticiing the central government for going ahead to implement the project despite opposition of several states.
