BJD Uproar Stalls House Over Central Fund for Polavaram

BHUBANESWAR:Dec 11;The Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Wednesday amid loud protest by members of the ruling BJD against Central funding to the Polavaram multi-irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaker Niranjan Pujari had to adjourn the House when Congress members rushed to the well and shouted slogans against the former for not allowing them to speak. The opposition BJP members too protested standing on their seats for ignoring them during discussion and not replying to their queries.

Soon after the Question Hour, members of the Treasury benches raised the Polavaram issue and shouted anti-Centre slogan for sanctioning funds for the project ignoring the State's opposition.

The BJD lawmakers demanded stopping of Polavaram irrigation project in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh during Zero Hour, which they claimed, will affect the tribal people of Malkangiri district.

The House Committee of the State Assembly on Thursday decided to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Polavaram issue. Briefing media persons after the meeting presided over by the Speaker, Committee member and BJD MLA Sanjay Dasburma said the committee would write a letter to the Prime Minister within 2-4 days.

"The committee will meet the prime minister within two weeks and submit a memorandum", he added.
