Bhubaneswar: Dec 16; A day after the retrenched contract high school teachers gheraoed the District Education Offices (DEOs) across the State, they under the banner of the Odisha Contract Teachers' Association (OCTA) on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the State Assembly and threatened to resort to fast-unto-death from Wednesday.
Shouting slogans against the Government for its apathetic attitude towards them, the aggrieved teachers too warned self-immolation. On Monday, around 4,000 retrenched contract teachers resumed their agitation demanding re-engagement.
"We are now hopeless. We are under deep mental stress. The Government is solely responsible for our misfortune. We will resort to self-immolation if the Government fails to reengage us at the earliest," said an agitating woman teacher. On December 2, the teachers had suspended its stir till December second week following assurance from the State Government to reinstate all retrenched contractual teachers.
Notably, the state government had cancelled appointment of nearly 4, 000 contractual teachers' recruited after June 11 this year following HC order.
"School and Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra had assured us that a decision with regard to reappointment of us would be taken by the second week of December. But till date nothing tangible has happened as yet," said the protesting woman teacher.
