Bhubaneswar: Dec 16; Ruling BJD members on Tuesday demanded that the Assembly pass a resolution to demand for the Bharat Ratna for former Chief Minister Biju Panaik. The ruling party members made this demand while participating in a discussion on a motion on 'Biju Patnaik's role in freedom struggle and aftermath nation building' move by Government Chief Whip Anant Das.
Initiating discussion MLA Bed Prakash Agrawal said the former Biju Patnaik had played a bigger role in the freedom struggle of the country and his efforts for development of Odisha is well remembered.
"I had a long association with Bijubabu. He took president's charge of State Congress only to woo the first Prime Minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru, for development of Odisha. His role in freedom struggle and his contribution to uphold the prestige of the country is well remembered by all. I would suggest the House to pass a resolution to demand Bharat Ratna for him," Agrawal said.
Many other BJD members too participated in the discussion while opposition Congress and BJP members were absent on the issue of Congress MLA Naba Das.
