Odisha: Winter Assembly Curtailed By 10 Days, Adjourned Sine Die

Bhubaneswar; Dec.17: The winter session of the Odisha Assembly was curtai led by 10 days and adjourned sine die on Wdednesday with the government chief whip moving a motion to this effect in the absence of the entire Opposition.

Since Tuesday, the Congress and BJP members have boycotted the House demanding withdrawal of the suspension of MLA Nabakishore Das.The MLA had been suspended for a week on the charge that he was watching obscene video clippings on his mobile phone inside the House.

The Opposition had pointed out that an allegation made by one MLA against another should be inquired before any action is initiated.Demanding withdrawal of the suspension pending inquiry,the Opposition had walked out of the HouseTuesday  saying they will not return.

Speaker Niranjan Pujari convened an all party meeting to try and resolve the issue , but no decision was taken and on Wednesday the House transacted business in the absence of the Opposition. On Tuesday the House moved a motion on Biju Patnaik's legendary deeds and passed the Odisha District Planning Committees (Amendment) Bill to provide 50 per cent reservation for women. After the passage of the Bill, ruling BJ D members suggested that the House adjourn sine die.

The government chief whip moved a motion curtailing the number of days of the session and the House was adjourned. As per original schedule the winter session was to continue till 26 December.
