Gangetic Dolphin found dead in Balasore

Balasore: Dec 18;  A Gangetic Dolphin was found dead in river Budhabalanga at Sahupada in Balasore district of Odisha on Thursday.

According to a state forest official, the dead female dolphin was about 10 years old. It measured around 1.9 metre in length and weighed 31 kg. Total length of its snout was 40cm.

After being fished out from the river, the body was sent for post-mortem, said the forest official.

In the autopsy report received, it has been revealed that the dolphin's lower jaw had been broken after its mouth got entangled in a fishing net and a part of the net was recovered from its stomach.

"Since the lower jaw of the dolphin was broken, it could not eat anything for days and due to starvation, it had ultimately died," pointed out the forest official quoting the autopsy report.

The dead dolphin was seen floating in the river by some villagers who in turn had informed the forest officials about the same.
