Mumbai; Dec.24: Born on December 24, 1959, Anil Kapoor lived in a chawl in Mumbai. His dad Surinder Kapoor was secretary to Shammi Kapoor and later a film producer. The family is related to Bollywood's illustrious Kapoor khandaan. Anil made his debut in Hamare Tumhare in 1979, and later starred in Shakti along with Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. A few films later, he acted in Tamil director Mani Ratnam's Pallavi Anu Pallavi.
But his first lead role in Bollywood came in Woh 7 Din in the same year. Making a mark in the movie with his heartwarming performance, the actor went on to do a variety of roles in his career spanning many decades. Anil Kapoor has played wide variety of roles and hasn't shied away from portraying a character with grey shades. After giving us films like Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Woh Saat Din, Parinda, Nayak and many more to cherish over the years, Anil Kapoor has done selective films in last ten years. But he has still managed to charm us with his unmatched style and great energy.
As the versatile actor turns 59, lets take a look at five of his best performances in last 10 years:
Dil Dhadakne Do
Zoya Akthar's dysfunctional family drama had Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akthar and Shefali Shah. But despite sharing screen with such a talented bunch of actors, Anil Kapoor shines like a diamond in this multi starrer. Sporting a salt and pepper look, Anil Kapoor played the role of business tycoon and stern patriarch to perfection in Dil Dhadakne Do.
After being part of English series 24, Anil Kapoor played the lead Jai Singh Rathore in the popular Indian TV series 24. The veteran actor just nailed the part of ex army officer who is torn between loyalty to his family and his country. With season 2 all set to be aired next year, we are excited to see more of Anil Kapoor's outstanding acting on small screen.
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is probably a very special film for Anil Kapoor. It not just gave him recognition in Hollywood and West, he also made us proud by being a part of Oscar winning film. Playing a rather sarcastic game show host, Anil Kapoor's onscreen charm could have given tough fight to Amitabh Bachchan's style of hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Comedy is something which comes very naturally to Mr Kapoor. After donning many memorable comic roles, Anil Kapoor turned into a lovelorn gangster/painter for Anees Bazme's Welcome. His Majnu Bhai from Welcome left everyone rolling down the aisle as he managed to rub shoulders with some wonderful actors like Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal.
My Wife's Murder
Anil Kapoor turned producer in 2005 with My Wife's Murder. Though the film didn't earn much at box office, Anil Kapoor's nuanced performance as the husband suspected for his ill tempered wife's murder was critically acclaimed.
We wish Anil Kapoor a very happy birthday and hope he continues to surprise us with wide variety of roles in coming years!
