Strong 6.7 quake hits northeastern region ;6 Dead, 100 Injured

Imphal, Jan 4: A major earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter Scale rocked Eastern and North Eastern part of India early today. 6 persons have reportedly died in Manipur's capital, Imphal and around 100 are injured.

The quake occurred at 4.35 AM at a depth of 17 km below the ground and the epicentre is located at somewhere in Tamenglong district of Manipur.

Police and disaster response teams in Imphal reported portions of walls, staircases and roofs in some buildings have collapsed.

Several buildings had been damaged, including the hospital, police said.
