Bhitarkanika to remain closed from Jan 8 for wildlife census

Rajnagar, Jan 6: Bhitarkanika National Park  will remain closed for visitors from January 8 to 17 for annual census of salt water crocodiles and migratory birds. During this period tourists will not be allowed into the national park.

"There will be no movement of tourists and ferrying of boats in and around the Park periphery during the census which will conclude on January 17," said by Bimal Prasanna Acharya, DFO of Rajnagar Wildlife Division.

As per last year's census, the total number of saltwater crocodiles found in the rivers, creeks, estuaries, accumulated land and backwaters in the Park was 1665. "We hope there would be a rise in their number this year," Acharya said.

Forest department officials said 17 teams will be deployed for counting of crocodiles and migratory birds.

Counting of crocodiles will be undertaken in Rajnagar, Dangmal, Gahirmatha and Mahakalpada ranges.
