Berhampur University plans solar streetlights on campus

Berhampur, Jan 14: Plans are afoot to install 50 solar street lights on Berhampur University (BU) campus in collaboration with the ministry of new and renewable energy and the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA).

An expert team of OREDA recently visited the university to conduct a feasibility study. The university authorities have identified the locations where these lights will be installed. These include boys and girls hostels, staff colony, administrative blocks and the different departments of the varsity.

Though a detailed project report is yet to be prepared, the university is likely to bear Rs 8 lakh of the total cost with the ministry concerned and OREDA chipping in with the rest, BU sources said.

The varsity is also planning to set up a small solar power plant of 1.5 KW capacity on its premises to light up other areas. "A decision in this regard will be taken in the next syndicate meeting," said BU vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar Behera.
