OHRC Sends Notice To Sambalpur DIG&SP:Juvenile's custodial torture

Sambalpur: Jan 14; Taking suo motu cognizance of the highhandedness of the Sambalpur district police in torturing a juvenile at the Hirakud police station, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought report from the northern range (Sambalpur) DIG and SP within four weeks.

The commission has posted January 22 for the next hearing.

On Tuesday, the highhandedness of the police came to fore when a private TV channel telecast a visual in which cops were seen brutally assaulting a 15-year-old boy by tying his hands and legs in at the Hirakud police station.

Soruces said the incident had occurred in September last year. Sources said police had detained the juvenile on September 10 on the charges of stealing a mobile phone.

Meanwhile, human rights campaigner Biswapriya Kanungo has moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking its intervention in the inhuman attitude of the police.
