Karnataka, Jan 19: The state government of Karnataka has decided to ban plastic by the end of January. According to a report in Deccan Herald, a senior state government official has said that the government has been holding meetings on banning plastic irrespective of its thickness. A draft notification of the ban has gone to the Cabinet for approval.
This draft notification has already been vetted by the Department of Forest, Environment and Ecology. As soon as the order is passed, it will come into immediate effect.
However, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) is yet to formulate a plan to reinforce the ban accordingly. The KSPCB Chairman Lakshman has told the daily that there was no alternative available to plastic at this point.
The KSPCB has been talking with the government, NGOs and paper manufacturers to come up with a suitable alternative to plastic, he said. One of the things that concern the KSPCB is the prevention of entry of plastic from other states into Karnataka.
This was a tough challenge, he stated, adding that without the government support it would be tough to implement.
