News

The opposition Congress today hit out at the state government accusing it of failing to meet basic needs of the people like drinking water, primary education even as the ruling party continued to remain in power for over 16 years.

The allegations were made by Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra of Congress while speaking in a debate on the Odisha Appriationn (Vote on Account) Bill, 2016. "This government knows to make pledges and forgets to fulfil them," Mishra said.

Though the state government promised to provide irrigation to at least 35 per cent of every block, the state government failed to keep the promise even as it ruled the state for over 16 years, Mishra said adding that the farmers are committing suicide due to crop loss owing to drought and loan burden.

"What pains the farmers that the government denies peasants' suicide due to crop loss or loan burden," the Leader of Opposition said.

He pointed out that above 200 farmers have committed suicide during this fiscal including recent death of a farmer in Bolangir district.

Mishra said though the state government promised free power for agriculture purpose, the farmers are not getting it besides the crop loan at the rate of one per cent.
