The Cuttack district jail committee reviewed the functioning of Choudwar Circle jail here on Saturday, and took stock of the problems faced by the jail staff and inmates.

The Committee comprising the District Session's Judge, District Magistrate, and the city Deputy Commissioner of Police reviewed the functioning of the jail for nearly three hours.

"This was a routine review of the jail by the Committee to look into the problems of the inmates," said District Magistrate Nirmal Chandra Mishra, who is also the Collector.

The Committee reviews the functioning of the jail once in every quarter of the year, and its report is submitted to the State High Court.

Sources said the Committee also reviewed the case status of the convicts facing death row and life imprisonment, including that of the undertrials.

It also took note of the safety and security of the jail by reviewing the functioning of CCTVs, jammers, and watchtowers. The food and reforms measures in the jail also came under scrutiny.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, however, with his team of policemen searched various cells and wards and retrieved banned substances like tobacco pouches, gutkha , beedi , and cigarettes from the possession of some inmates, which were destroyed immediately.
