Woman poisons her three children, commits suicide

A married woman allegedly poisoned her three children and committed suicide at Dangariguda village under Koshagumuda block of Nabarangpur district in Odisha on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the deceased were identified as Kumari Harijan (29), her one-and-a-half-year-old son Nilu Harijan, daughters Prabita Harijan (7) and Rima Harijan (4).

All of them had consumed some toxic substance.

At around 2 p.m., inhabitants of Dangariguda village spotted smoke coming out of the closed house of the family. When they broke open the door, they found the woman and her children in an unconscious state.

The mother and her children were rushed to the Koshagumuda Community Health Centre (CHC). All the three children were declared dead at the CHC. As the mother was in a serious condition, the CHC authorities shifted her to Nabarangpur district hospital. But she died before she could be transported to the district hospital.

According to Koshagumuda police station inspector in-charge Saroj Kumar Upadhayay, the police have started investigation into the case. But primary evidences hint that the woman had consumed poison after administering the same to her children.

Financial problem or a family tussle is suspected to be the reason behind this mass suicide. The deceased's husband is a mason, who works in Chhattisgarh. He was not at home when the incident took place, but reached Koshagumuda after receiving the news of death of his wife and children.
