Two-day Crime branch remand for ex-Cong MLA

Police here on Thursday registered one more case against former Congress MLA (Sanakhemundi) Ramesh Jena, while Crime Branch (CB) took him on two-day remand in connection with the murder of Srinibash Rath, a former sarpanch of Malabhanja in Ganjam district, four years ago.

"Berhampur Sadar police has registered a land grabbing case against Jena and his two associates, Congress corporator R Murali Mohan and builder Kiran Panda," said in-charge SP (Berhampur) Asish Singh. They had allegedly grabbed 4.1 acres of land at Nimakhandi. Police, however, declined to name the complainant.

With this, 16 cases have been registered against the former MLA since his arrest from Bhubaneswar on March 6. Police have so far arrested 25 associates of Jena and seized 11 revolvers from them. Police had registered a case against the former MLA in Rath's murder that took place on March 9, 2012, after weapons used in the crime was recovered from his land at Gambhariguda village under Patapur police limits.

The case was handed over to the CB on November 27, 2012. The investigating agency had sought five-day remand of Jena but was allowed to interrogate him for two days.
