Odisha's Braveheart Lady breathes her last


The memorial service for Late Mrs. Himamayee Sarma, wife of Vice Admiral H. Sarma will be held at Bhubaneswar on the 25th May.  She passed away on the 15th May 2016 after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Himamayee Sarma was born on the 30th October 1930 to the Late Dr. Raj Kishore Nanda in Bhadrak.  She married Lt. Cdr. Harilal Sarma in 1946. Her husband’s naval career led her to set up home all across India and twice in England.

She was well travelled during her lifetime and had the unique distinction of having circumvented the globe in m.v. State of West Bengal, as the Captains wife.While in the England she acquired a Montessori degree and also the license to be a teacher in the same. With her position as the wife of the Deputy Naval Advisor to the Indian High Commission, she twice met and shook hands with Queen Elizabeth II. She drove around in a Mercedes Benz when women driving cars was a rarity in India. Her accomplishments were many. As the wife of a Senior Naval Officer, she exemplified grace and humility and was often held up as an example to younger naval wives.
