THE Asia's Best Universities 2017: IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, Veltech Chennai in Top 50

Times Higher Education, popularly known as THE, released the Asia University Rankings 2017 on Wednesday, 15th March.
According to the rankings, 33 Indian universities featured in the top 300. Out of these 33, eight are the already established ones while seventeen are the new entrants that have made it to the top 100.
Following is a snapshot consisting of highlights of THE Asia University Rankings 2017:
University Location Rank (or Band)
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore 27
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-B) Bombay (Mumbai) 42
Veltech University Chennai 43
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-D) Delhi 54
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-M) Madras 62
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) Kanpur 63
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-R) Roorkee 70
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Kgp) Kharagpur 87
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-G) Guwahati 101-110
Jadavpur University Kolkata 101-110
In the year 2016, only 16 universities had featured in the Asia’s Best Universities Rankings. Hence, this year, India has more than doubled its representation and has become the 3rd most represented nation in the rankings table for the very first time.
Interestingly, IIT Kanpur was in the 101-110 band in 2016 but has managed to bag the 63rd spot this year, majorly because of a leap in the amount of industry income.
On the other hand, University of Calcutta is in the 191-200 band as compared to 141-150 in 2016 and Amrita University from 181-190 to 251-plus this year.
Moreover, India's overall performance deteriorated as many institutes lost their places or ranks because of increased competition.
The first and second position was bagged by the National University of Singapore and Peking University, China respectively. Two Japanese institutes/universities made it to the top 20. However, about 23% of universities have featured in the top 300. Six universities from China and five each from Hong Kong and South Korea found a place in the top 20.
