GL v RPS, IPL 2017: Andrew Tye hattrick powers Gujarat Lions' first win in IPL 10

News

RAJKOT: A brilliant five-wicket haul by seamer Andrew Tye (5-17), including a hat-trick, and then some characteristically quickfire batting by their batting heavyweights Brendon McCullum (49, 32b, 5x4, 3x6), Dwayne Smith (47, 30b, 8x4, 1x6), skipper Suresh Raina (35 not out, 22b, 4x4, 1x6) and Aaron Finch (33 not out, 19b, 3x4, 2x6), who finished the match with two sixes, helped Gujarat Lions thrash Rising Pune Supergiant by seven wickets and record their first win in IPL-10 on Friday night at the SCA Stadium here.

Chasing 172, the Lions galloped on a blazing 53-ball 94-run start by flamboyant openers McCullum and Smith before Raina and Finch took them home. The hosts' strategy to attack Pune's strike bowler — leggie Imran Tahir proved successful as the South African was smashed for 53 runs in four overs.

After managing just one wicket in their previous two games, the hosts made four changes to their XI, replacing opener Jason Roy with seamer Tye. The move worked brilliantly, and showed that good bowlers are as good as gold in this format, as the Australian pacer picked up a fifer, including a hat-trick in his final over, to help his team restrict RPSG to 171 for eight after Gujarat had elected to field.

Coming to bowl in the sixth over, when Pune were on the rampage with skipper Steve Smith (43, 28b, 6x4, 1x6) and Rahul Tripathy (33, 17b, 3x4, 2x6) going great guns, Tye provided a crucial breakthrough when he made the latter spoon an easy catch to mid-off.
