WannaCry, A Global Problem, Odisha On Alert: IT Minister

Even as WannaCry Ransomware continues to affect computers in several places in Odisha, IT Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera on Thursday assured that 'adequate measures' are being taken to tackle the situation.

The statement came soon after computers at Utkal Gramya Bank in Titlagarh were hacked on Thursday.  This is the second Ransomware attack to be reported in Odisha.

Behera said several advisories have been issued for general internet users and security features enhanced with assistance from State Data Centre at the secretariat.

"Ransomware attack is not confined to Odisha rather it is a global problem. Senior officials are closely monitoring developments for appropriate action," said Behera.

The entire operation in Utkal Gramya Bank in the bank was paralysed as the data in the computers were encrypted.

"WannaCry has affected as data stored in one system has been corrupted and we are analysing data," Saroj Tripathy, DGM OCAC said.

IT Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera on the other hand also silenced the opposition parties, who had turned the heat on IT adviser Sam Pitroda for his 'absence' in such crisis situation.

"Sam Pitroda has been appointed as adviser for development of the IT sector while his presence under present situation is not warranted," Behera added.

A special team of the Cyber Police, Crime Branch meanwhile have also started investigation into the attack on computers of Community Health Centre, Purushottampur which occurred on May 15.

A case under sections 65/66 Information Technology Act and 385 IPC registered after complaint was filed today, Special Director General (DG) Police (Crime Branch) B.K. Sharma informed in a tweet.
