Anti-liquor protest: Women, cops clash in M'bhanj

Baripada, Oct 23: Clashes between women protestors and police broke out at Rasgovindpur in Mayubhnaj district on Monday, after police resorted to lathi-charged on the women who were protesting a country-made liquor shop and manufacturing unit in their locality.

In retaliation, women protestors also threw stones on the police personnel. A senior police official and a woman from the both sides were injured in the clash.

According to reports, a large number of women of different SHGs gathered near the liquor shop and manufacturing unit to demolish it. However, police under the leadership of local Sub-Divisional Police Officer waylaid the amgry women.

Protesting the police action and the demanding immediate closure of the illegal liquor unit, the protestors insisted on closure of the unit forcing the police to resort to agitation.

Since the liquor manufacturing unit and shop was licensed one, police too tried to protect it. And a scuffle ensued between the cops and the protesting women injuring SDPO Dhiren Nanda and a woman protestor.
The women resorted to agitation as the administration and excise personnel had failed either to close down or shift it.
