Ashoka Market demolition begins in city

Bhubaneswar, Oct 28: Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) began razing of Ashoka Market, located near Master Canteen Square for the construction of Town Centre Project as part of the Smart City Project. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to avoid any untoward incident during the demolition drive.

Though the BDA had announced to demolish the market earlier, but it was delayed as some shopkeepers moved the Orissa High Court (HC) challenging the civic body's decision.

After the High Court disposed off the case and asked the BDA to give priority to the existing shopkeepers during allotment of shops once the Town Centre Project developed, the BDA successfully persuaded the shopkeepers to vacate their shops.

Sources said as many as 129 licensees or shop owners who were evicted from Ashoka Market were allotted shops at different locations by the BDA.
