Farmers' plight: BJP to stage stir before all blocks from Nov 7 to 17

Bhubaneswar: Sharpening its attack on the Naveen Patnaik Government for its insensitiveness towards the farmers leading to their suicides, opposition BJP on Sunday announced to stage a State-wide agitation from November 7 to 17.

BJP Legislature Party Leader KV Singh Deo today said that the party activists would hold demonstration in front all the 314 blocks to protest the State Government's apathetic attitude towards farmers and to highlight the farmers' problems.

'Farmers are the worst sufferers in the BJD rule. Minister is threatening to farmers instead of extending a helping hand. Farmers are committing suicides to get rid of crop loss and loan burden due to the Government negligence,' said Singh Deo at a news conference at the party State headquarters here.

Singh Deo also slammed Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout for his announcement that farmers torching their crops will not be eligible to get compensation.

On Wednesday, Brunda Sahu (55), a farmer from Kaliapani village in Bargarh, had allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison, a day after setting fire to his crops. Taking a cue from Sahu, farmers in Jharsuguda, Nuapada, Ganjam, Sambalpur, Rayagada and Kalahandi have torched their pest affected crops as well.
