Bhubaneswar: Several Congress leaders, including Pradesh Congress Committee president Prasad Harichandan and former PCC president Jayadev Jena were detained in Bargarh today by police as the party held a protest rally in front of the Bargarh district Collectorate to condemn the alleged suicide of farmers due to crop loss and debt burden.

Hundreds of party workers were seen gathered near the district Collector's office holding the party's flags and chanting slogans against the State Government and district administration.

The protestors held the mega farmers' rally in a bid to sharpen its attack on the Naveen Patnaik Government for its insensitiveness towards the farmers leading to their suicides.

Last week, Harichandan and other Congress leaders visited Baragarh and met the family members of farmer Brunda Sahu, who committed suicide a day after torching his pest affected paddy field. He demanded the Government to admit the suicide of farmers due to crop loss and pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased farmer.
