BJP central team visits Western Odisha, meets pest-hit farmers

Sambalpur: A team of senior central BJP leaders on Friday visited several villages
in Western Odisha and interacted with the farmers who have suffered crop loss due to pest attack.

The team visited Chamarpada of Sohela, Jaring village of Bijepur, Dhaunrakhenda of Barpali, Kalapani, Saranda, Nuakhairpali and discussed with the farmers and their problems during the current season.

The BJP team comprising Sabitribai Thakur MP, Om Prakash Yadav MP, P Sugnakar Rao the national general secretary of the BJP Kissan Morcha, Sambhu Kum, the secretary of BJP Kissan Morcha, Uddi Tirupati Rao, the state president of BJP Kissan Morcha of Andhra Pradesh visited the houses of the farmers who have committed suicide due to crop loss and brown plant hopper attack.

The team members also visited the paddy fields of different villages to witness the devastation due to drought and pest attack during the current kharif season.
They went to the houses of Khageswar Meher, Brunda Sahu and P Naveen Kumar who have committed suicide recently.

The team observed that though there has been major crop loss in the rain fed and irrigated areas of the district and also in the Hirakud Command Area the Odisha government has not taken adequate precautions to save crop and the farmers. 

Sabitribai Thakur said the people of Western Odisha and the Hirakud command area solely depended on agriculture. In such circumstances, taking casual view to farmers' problem by the state government is nothing but an unpardonable offence, she remarked.

'We will submit the report on our observations to the party's national president Amit Saha who will later take up the matter with the Union Agriculture minister,' Om Prakash Yadav said.

Union Minister of State for Agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will arrive here on November 12 for an on the spot study of the drought situation in the state and also the pest attack of paddy field in several parts of Western Odisha.
