Odisha Govt to seek GI Tag for 'Odishara Rasagolla'

Bhubaneswar: The massive outrage on social media and TV channels forced the Odisha Government to wake up from the slumber and issue a press release, saying they would seek GI registration for Odisha Rasagolla.

'Rasagolla, which originated in Odisha, has been offered at Jagannath Temple in Puri as part of religious rituals since the 12th century by the Odias. It has come to our notice that Banglar Rasagolla has been registered with Geographical Indication (G.I.) on an application filed by Govt. of West Bengal. This only provides G.I. tag to the 'Banglar Rasagolla' specific to West Bengal. Govt. of Odisha is in the process of obtaining G.I. for the 'Odishara Rasagolla', which dates back to more than 800 years,' the press release said.

The Odisha Government has been under severe criticism for failing to act on time and giving the edge to West Bengal in Rasagolla War.
