Bijepur by-poll: BJD doubts Election Commission

Bhubaneswar: The reputation of the Election Commission of India came for intense questioning with the ruling BJD in Odisha doubting its role in connection with the ensuing by-poll for the Bijepur Assembly by-poll.

Senior BJD leader and Labour Minister Sushant Singh on Sunday said that there is a public perception that the ECI is delaying in announcing the schedule for the Bijepur by-poll due to the pressure from the BJP led Government at the Centre.
'People across Odisha have now started believing that the Election Commission is delaying in announcing the schedule for the Bijepur by-poll due to pressure from Centre,' Singh told reporters.

Maintaining that the saffron party believes that they will win the poll if they delay the by-poll, Singh asserted that the regional party will capture the seat.
On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma termed the allegations of the Minister as vague.

The by-poll for Bijepur Assembly seat was necessitated after the death of sitting Congress MLA Subal Sahu on August 22. Sahu's wife Ritarani is the BJD nominee for the by-poll. Both BJP and Congress are yet to name their candidates.
