Naveen to take up Mahanadi fight at the inter-state meet Today

Bhubaneswar: After writing two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is set to take up the Mahanadi fight at the
inter-state council meet scheduled in New Delhi Today.

Naveen would strongly place state's demand to constitute a tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the meeting to be chaired by Union home minister Rajnath Singh, said an official source. The chief minister had written two letters to Modi on November 7 and 17.

As the Union water resources ministry did not constitute the tribunal, Naveen is likely to express his concern over the issue in the meeting. The chief minister had also raised the issue in the previous inter-state meet held on April 9 and demanded to constitute the tribunal by November 19.

The Centre, according to section 4 (1) of the Inter State River Water Disputes Act of 1956, was supposed to constitute the Mahanadi tribunal before November 19 as Odisha government had filed the statutory complaint on November 19, 2016.
