Chit fund scam: MLA Pravat Biswal denied bail

Bhubaneswar: In a major jolt to BJD MLA Pravat Biswal, who was arrested by CBI for his alleged complicity in the Seashore Group chit fund scam in September, the Orissa High Court today rejected his bail plea.

On November 24, the Orissa HC reserved its verdict on the bail petition filed by the Cuttack-Choudwar MLA.

Sources said the High Court advised the three-time MLA to appeal for bail after the investigating agency submits a chargesheeet in the case.

Biswal has moved the court for bail citing poor health condition. Soon after his arrest on September 19 by the central investigating agency, the three-time MLA fell sick and admitted to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack as his condition deteriorated and since then he is undergoing treatment at the SCB.

Meanwhile, two social activists from the State filed a petition in the Supreme Court praying for transfer of the case from Orissa High Court to Kolkata High Court on Wednesday. On the other hand, BJP youth wing staged a road blockade in Cuttack protesting against the MLA's long stay at the hospital.
