Lakhs throng Puri Jagannath Temple on New Year

Puri: Lakhs of people devotees and tourists from various parts of the country thronged pilgrim city of Puri today to usher in the New Year. 

A majority of them have come to offer prayers at the 12th century Jagannath temple to begin their new year, while some arrived just to enjoy the beginning of 2018 at the beach.

According to SJTA chief PK Jena, the temple opened at 1.45 am and Mangal Alati and all rituals were conducted on time.

Devotees are being allowed entry to the temple in patches, controlled by police personnel at barricades, outside at the Singhadwar.

'We expect five to six lakh devotees to visit the temple. All arrangements have been made for smooth darshan of the deities,' said Jena.

The district authorities have deployed hundreds of additional policemen and made elaborate security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident.
