Railway Ministry to shelve Sitalapalli wagon manufacturing project

Bhubaneswar: The Railway Ministry has decided not to proceed with the proposed wagon manufacturing project at Sitalapalli in Ganjam district.

The wagon production is surplus in the country and there is no need for a new wagon factory, revealed the reply furnished by the Railway Board in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by applicant Hemanta Kumar Panda of Bolangir. Panda had filed a similar RTI in 2016 before the Railway Board.

Odisha BJP general secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra said work on the proposed wagon factory at Sitalapalli under the East Coast Railway has been cancelled for the time being. If the demand for wagons increases in future, the Sitalapalli factory project will get a priority.

The factory was announced in 2011-12 by the then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. Since then every year the allocation has been meager and the implementation of the project was doubtful.

In 2016 Railway Budget, a token amount of Rs 1,000 was allocated for the manufacturing unit and in 2017 budget, the ministry did not sanction any amount for the proposed wagon factory.
