Odisha BJP calls for 'Mandi Chala' agitation

Bhubaneswar: Irked over alleged irregularities at mandis (paddy procurement centers), the BJP today announced State-wide Mandi Chala agitation for two weeks starting February 10.

The BJP Kisan Morcha will organise the agitation to protesting embezzlement of paddy by middlemen.

As part of the agitation, the activists of the Kisan Morcha will guard paddy mandis to keep a close eye on the purchasing of paddy from farmers.

The party alleged that middlemen are playing a major role in selling paddy at the cost of actual farmers with the help of Government officials.

'Due to nexus between millers and officials concerned, farmers are forced to sell their paddy below the minimum support price (MSP),' alleged Surath Biswal of the Kisan Morcha at a press conference here.

He threatened that if the Government fails to intervene immediately to ensure that farmers get MSP for their produce without any trouble then the party will intensify agitation.
