406 endangered Indian Star tortoises rescued from Vivek Express

Bhubaneswar: The officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Vijaywada today recovered 406 Indian Star tortoises of different sizes from Vivek Express train.

Based on specific intelligence that Indian Star Tortoise, an endangered species were being illegally transported and meant to be taken out of the country, the DRI officials launched an operation and intercepted two women passengers travelling by Vivek Express train from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari.

On search, as many as 406 Indian Star tortoises of different sizes were found in four bags.

During interrogation, the two women admitted that the tortoises were collected by a person from Kadiri and they were asked to deliver the same at Bhubaneswar so that another person will export it to out of India to Bangladesh.
