BJD reinstates Raghunath Mohanty as vice president

Bhubaneswar: The BJD on Friday appointed senior leader and ex-minister Raghunath Mohanty as vice president and party's observer for Dhenkanal district, said an official communication.

The five-time MLA from Basta in Balasore district was removed from the post in March 2013 after he was arrested in a dowry torture case slapped by his daughter-in-law Barsa Swony Choudhury.

Even though Mohanty was continuously winning from Basta since 1990, BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik had also denied him a party ticket.

Mohanty had met the chief minister at his residence in June, last year, a year after his son and estranged daughter-in-law announced their reunion thereby paving the way for the former minister to return to active politics.

Mohanty is appointed as BJD's Dhenkanal district observer in place of Damodar Rout, who was removed from the position for his alleged derogatory remarks on Brahmins in December, last year.
