Section 144 imposed in Bhadrak to ensure peaceful Ram Navami

Bhadrak: The Bhadrak district administration has made elaborate arrangements to ensure Ram Navami celebration is a peaceful one this year. To start with, it has imposed Section 144 (unlawful assembly) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in the town for an indefinite period.

Starting today the prohibitory orders will be in place from 6 pm daily for an indefinite period, sources said. This year Ram Navmi falls on March 25.

Last year, Bhadrak town witnessed communal tension, which stemmed from an offensive Facebook remark on Hindu deities, including Lord Ram ahead of Ram Navami. The town was under curfew for many days.

Mob had attacked police personnel, vandalized vehicles and torched several shops. The State Government too had shunted Bhadrak district collector Prabhat Kumar Bhoi and SP Dilip Das for their failure to deal with the situation.

Trouble had started in the first week of April when an unidentified miscreant posted derogatory remarks against Ram and Sita on Facebook.

In September 2016 also, Bhadrak was on the boil when religious outrage broke out during immersion of Ganesh idols.
