Surat minor rape-murder victim may be from Odisha: Gujarat Home Minister

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has said that the minor who was found raped and murdered in Surat may be from Odisha. State home minister PS Jadeja said the police have no information about her family.

He said posters of the victim were printed and after that, the police suspect the girl is from Odisha. 'Police have no info about her family. We got posters printed and now suspect she was from Odisha. We contacted Odisha DGP and checked photos of more than 8,000 missing children. We also examined CCTV and call records in the area. We will ensure justice for the girl.'

The body of the girl was from Pandesara in Surat. The girl was held captive, tortured and raped before being killed. The body bore 86 injury marks, including injuries on her private parts. The girl's age has been estimated to be between nine and 11 years old. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch on Sunday.

The body was found in bushes near a cricket ground on April 6. The doctor who conducted the post-mortem said the injuries were caused over a period of time. An FIR had been lodged under sections 302, 323, 376 and POCSO Act against unidentified persons.

In Surat, people took out a candlelight march against the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, who was tortured for over eight days and killed on April 5.

The incident comes to light when the entire country is seething with anger over the barbarous gang-rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district.  The girl was allegedly held captive at a temple and gang-raped by a group of men before being strangulated to death.
