Odisha opposes Chhattisgarh's fresh Mahanadi plan at river meet

Bhubaneswar: Food Supplies Minister Surya Narayan Patro raised objection to Chhattisgarh's plan to build a new barrage over the Mahanadi at the first regional conference of eastern States on river water in Kolkata today.

When Mahanadi water sharing issue is yet to be settled, the Chhattisgarh Government has floated a tender bid for the construction of yet another barrage on the river. All these issues will be raised in the conference.

Patro is representing Odisha at the meeting convened by the Union Ministry of Water Resources. Water Resources Secretary PK Jena also attended the meeting. Odisha is opposing the inordinate delay on the part of the Centre by not sharing the terms of reference (ToR) with Odisha for the tribunal.

Since Odisha is yet to receive the ToR for the tribunal and the State Government has been unable to file the petition.

Union Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Ram Meghwal has called the meeting of five eastern States and asked them to submit their points of view on various issues to be discussed.

Sources said along with the Mahanadi water dispute, Patro also raises the issue of how Odisha's interest in case of Polavaram is being sidelined.
