Sambalpur: Sambalpur Municipal Corporation and fisheries officials today conducted joint raids on the fish outlets at nine places in the city and collected the sample for examination whether the dead fishes bear formalin content.
Raids were conducted following the order of district Collector. Samples of imported Andhra fish and local Hirakud fish were collected for examination. Necessary action will be taken after report came, Collector said.
Odisha government tightened its noose after cancer causing chemical formalin used to store dead fish was traced in the fish in Bhubaneswar. Nine samples of various fish categories were collected from different fish markets and Chilika Fresh outlets in the city. The carcinogenic substance tested positive in one, pomfret, out of nine samples of fish.
The state government had directed district collectors to examine fish sold in their respective areas to find any trace of formalin. The districts which supply fish to different towns in the state are under surveillance.
