Students' Union election: Nominations filed amid unrest

Bhubaneswar: Students of various colleges and universities across Odisha filed their respective nomination papers on Wednesday for the upcoming Students' Union election scheduled for October 11. The candidates began filing papers from 9 am and the process concluded at 12 pm.The list of eligible candidates will be published on October 4.
According to a notification issued by the Higher Education department on September 28, the 'What I Stand For' meeting will be held on October 10, a day before the polling. The results will be declared the same day as the polling.The oath-taking ceremony of the winning candidates will be held on October 12.Students across the various colleges and universities including Rama Devi Women's University, BJB Autonomous College, Maharishi College of Natural Law and Rajdhani College in Bhubaneswar filed their nominations for the students' union elections.
Reportedly, some bike-borne miscreants today threw bombs inside the campus of Niali College in Cuttack district while the students were filing their nomination papers. Later, police forces were deployed in and around the college to avoid any untoward situation.Bombs were also hurled in Anandapur College in Keonjhar district on Tuesday night. However, the filing of nomination was carried out in the college today amid tight security.According to sources, unidentified miscreants hurled bombs at the ladies hostel of NC College in Jajpur early morning today following which college authorities declared sine die. However, no casualties or damages have been reported in the incident.Besides, tension erupted in Deogarh College after the students locked up the main gate of the college today.Notably, the authorities of Ravenshaw University in Cuttack, Sambalpur University and Utkal University and some other colleges and universities have cancelled the elections following campus violence.According to available information, the Sambalpur University has been declared sine die today following student unrest over cancellation of elections.
