US awards $1.05 billion for launch system, rocket propulsion prototypes

Washington : The US Department of Defense awardedcontracts worth USD 1.05 billion to three companies, namely United Launch Services,ATK Launch Systems Inc. and SpaceX for launch system and rocket propulsionprototypes on Wednesday, according to a press release.
The release further stated that a USD 967 million contract was awarded to United Launch Services for the development of a Launch System Prototype for the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) programme. It also mentioned that a USD 46.9 million contract was awarded to ATK Launch Systems Inc. for the development of three rocket propulsionsystem prototypes for the EELV programme, while SpaceX was awarded a $33.6 million contract for the development of the Raptor rocket propulsion system prototypes for the same programme.
