Kumki elephant Yashoda tramples villager to death

Angul: Kumki elephant Yashoda, who was recently engaged to assist the expert teams in tranquilising tigress Sundari in Satkosia forest, trampled a man to death today.
The incident took place at Purunakote range office in the district when the deceased man, identified as Sudur Pradhan of Matiasahi village, was feeding the trained pachyderm.
According the Angul DFO, the Kumki jumbo, which was chained in the range office, tossed Pradhan with its trunk and slammed him on the ground killing him on the spot.'Though it was prohibited to go near the elephant, the man was trying to feed her banana plant and the mishap occured,' the DFO said and added that an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh will be given to the deceased man's next of kin.
Kumki elephant Yashoda was shifted to Satkosia from Chandaka Godibari to assist the expert teams to tranquilise tigress Sundari.
Currently, the jumbo has been restrained with chains and the police have sent the body for post-mortem.
