Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Gaja': 6 Killed, 81,000 Evacuated in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Six people were killed as the severe cyclonic storm 'Gaja' hit with ferocity and made a landfall in Tamil Nadu Friday with a wind speed up to 120 km per hour.Reports said the dead included two residents of Cuddalore and four people in Thanjavur.
Met office sources said the cyclone coastal regions including Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thondi, and Pamban in Tamil Nadu and Karaikkal and Puducherry received rainfall ranging between 3 cm and 8 cm.Cuddalore received 8 cm, Nagapattinam 5 cm, and neighbouring Puducherry and Karaikkal 5 cm by 5.30 am Friday, the sources said. Officials of Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority said over 81,948 people were evacuated from low lying areas.They were safely sheltered in 471 relief camps and centres in six districts such as  Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, and Tiruvarur.Authorities have declared a holiday for schools and educational institutions in Nagapattinam district.
