Mumbai over bridge collapse: Toll rises to six, FIR registered

Mumbai: The death toll rises to six in the foot over bridge collapse at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station in Mumbai on Thursday evening.An FIR was registered against officials concerned of the Central Railway and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under section 304A.According to reports a big slab of the foot over bridge came down crashing at around 7.20 pm injuring several pedestrians.

Personnel from NDRF, Mumbai Police, Fire Brigade and other rescue agencies reached the spot and immediately evacuated those buried under the debris. They were immediately shifted to hospitals.They  were admitted to three nearby hospitals, St George Hospital, G T Hospital and Bombay Hospital.Those who succumbed to their injuries are Apoorva Prabhu (35), Ranjana Tambe (40), Zahid Shiraj Khan (32), Bhakti Shinde (40), Sarika Kulkarni (35) and Tapendra Singh (35). Two women who were killed in the tragedy were staff of GT Hospital, police said.

An ex-gratia of Rs 5 Lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in the tragic incident was announced by Maharashtra government. The injured will be compensated with Rs 50,000 each.Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident.This is the second major bridge collapse in Mumbai within a span of nine months. The Gokhale Bridge over Andheri railway station in suburban Mumbai had collapsed on July 3, 2018.
