Elephant herd triggers panic in Balasore

Balasore: Panic gripped the residents of Nilagiri area in Balasore district after a herd of marauding elephants was spotted in Tinikosia forest early on Wednesday morning.The herd of 35 elephants with five calves entered the human habitations from a forest in Jharkhand.The panicked villagers fear that the herd might go on a rampage in the village by destroying farmlands and damaging houses.

However, forest department officials have reached the spot and the movement of the elephants is being constantly monitored.While an operation to drive away the jumbo herd has been launched, necessary steps to deal with the elephant menace are underway, the forest officials said.
