Hirakud Dam Opens 16 Sluice Gates

Sambalpur: Sixteen sluice gates of Hirakud Dam have been opened today to release water into river Mahanadi.

The sluice gates were opened phase by phase. Today morning three gates were opened. By today evening 16 sluice gates have been opened as the rain continues in the upper catchment area of the reservoir. Yesterday only one sluice gate was opened.The water level of the reservoir has touched 621ft today.

Nearly 3 lakh cusec water is entering to the reservoir.  The release of water through 16 ngates has created panic among the people of downstream districts. As many areas have been submerged in flood water,flood area people felt, the situation may be worsened. But Water Resources Secretary Pradeep Jena has denied the possibility of any major flood.  

The State Government has asked the district Collectors of Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapra and Khurda to remain alert keeping in view the flood situation. The collectors have been advised to distribute relief materials to the affected people, if necessary. 

After the opening of 16 gates,  4.35 lakh cusec water will flow through Khairamal and 5 lakh cusec water will flow through Mundali.
