Bhubaneswar, Oct 5: Nandankanan Zoological Park celebrated 'Elephant Day' on Saturday as part of a programme to raise awareness about the jumbo.
Visitors and school children participated in the event, which is part of celebrating the 'Wildlife Week'.
'In the state, there are as many as 2,000 elephants. I urged people to contribute for safety of elephant and conservation of the habitat of the pachyderms,' said Raj Kumar Sharma, chief secy, Forest department.
Adorned with special customised appliqué apparel, the pachyderms were offered banana and coconut.
'We have eight elephants in the zoo. The main objective of celebrating 'Elephant Day' is to create awareness amongst the public on how to conserve the big animal,' said Sudershan Panda, director of Nandankanan Zoological Park.
