1521 schools, 2.5 lkh hectares Crops damaged due to Cyclone Hudhud

Bhubaneswar, Oct 20: The severe cyclonic storm Hudhud, which brought devastation within few hours in the southern part of Odisha, now the farmers as well as the government will have to bear a huge loss as it has damaged 1521 schools across seven districts and affected the crops in more than 2.5 lakh hectares in eight districts.

The School and Mass Education Department has estimated the cost of damage to the schools at Rs 28.15 crore, while the Agriculture department has estimated the cost of loss at Rs 23.77 crore.

In a report to the state government, the School and Mass Education department said that 841 primary school buildings in

Koraput, 372 in Gajapati and 104 in Rayagada district have been damaged. A total of 1386 primary school buildings have

been damaged in Ganjam, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Kandhamal districts. The cyclone either partially or completely damaged 135 high school buildings, 25 office buildings of School and Mass Education department and 27 mid-day meal (MDM) houses in these seven districts.
