Run for Unity: A Masterstroke of Modi to remember Legacy of Patel

New Delhi, Oct 31: Prime Minister played a masterstroke from the dais of Run for Unity aiming at hailing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, first home minister of independent India and his legacy on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Iron Man, the great architect of Modern and United India. However, Modi did not forget to remember late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her martyrdom day.

Modi flagged off the Run for Unity on Friday on 139th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, which is being commemorated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. He paid floral tributes at the statue of India's Iron Man at Patel Chowk in the morning. Then he addressed the participants of the "Run for Unity" at Vijay Chowk.

Remembering Patel and his contribution to the country, Modi said, "Just as Ramakrishna Paramhansa remains incomplete without Swami Vivekananda, the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi cannot be fully written without contribution of Sardar Patel."

Modi said, "the country which forgets history can never create history, so for a country filled with aspirations, a country whose youth has dream, we should not forget our personalities of history.... country should not divide history and legacy according to our ideologies," while addressing the crowd gathered on the occasion to commemorate birth anniversary of Patel.

"Patel devoted his life for the unity of the nation and it was unfortunate that "our very own people" were killed on his birth anniversary 30 years ago" Modi said remembering late prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was assassinated on this day leaving the country into grief.

He also described the assassination as an assault on the unity of the country. But, possibly referring to the anti-Sikh riots that followed after Gandhi was killed by her bodyguards, he mentioned it was not a reflection on any particular community but an attack on the entire country. He again lamented the assassination was on the birth anniversary of an iconic figure. However, he did made his visit to the Shakti Sthal (Indira Gandhi Memorial) to pay floral tribute to Mrs Gandhi.

Media could not stop of politicising this Run for Unity, however, in a welcome speech, urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu had made it clear the event was “not to undermine any other leader but only to do justice to Sardar Patel”.
